Here's another example of politicians talking a big game about our Second Amendment rights, then stabbing us in the back when it counts.
The Ohio House of Representatives just killed House Bill 495, the Freedom to Carry Act—a common-sense measure that would have let existing concealed handgun license holders carry other lawful weapons, not just pistols. And get this: it passed with help from Democrats. That's right. Republican "supermajority" members voted with the left to bury a bill that simply extended existing Second Amendment protections.
Representative Jennifer Gross, a 21-year Air Force veteran, introduced this bill last October. It wasn't radical. It wasn't extreme. It just acknowledged that folks who'd already jumped through Ohio's background checks, training requirements, and fees deserved to carry more than just a handgun under their license.
Look, I get it—the permit system itself is already an infringement on our rights. The Second Amendment doesn't say "the right to keep and bear arms... with a government-issued license." But if we're going to have this bureaucratic maze, at least make it consistent and fair.
The Freedom to Carry Act would have renamed Ohio's concealed handgun license to a concealed-weapons license and actually honored the spirit of what licensees already do: exercise their right to keep and bear arms responsibly.
This isn't just an Ohio problem, either. This pattern of obstructing the people's will shows up in statehouses across the country.
