Maryland Trying to Make Your Carry Permit Worthless: SAF Takes Fight to Supreme Court

September 22, 2026

Alright, let me tell you something that should frost your shorts. Remember when the Supreme Court told Maryland they HAD to start issuing concealed carry permits after the Bruen decision? Well, the state didn't take that sitting down – they just made those permits basically worthless everywhere you want to go.

That's exactly what the Second Amendment Foundation is fighting against. They've filed a reply brief with the Supreme Court in Novotny v. Moore, challenging Maryland's so-called "sensitive places" carry ban. And listen to this laundry list of where they say you can't carry: mass transit, restaurants that serve alcohol, state parks, hospitals, museums, stadiums – you name it. They've created a patchwork of restrictions that basically makes it impossible to actually defend yourself in your daily life.

"When forced by the Supreme Court to issue carry permits, Maryland simply made those permits useless everywhere," said SAF Executive Director Adam Kraut. He's right. This is states thumbing their noses at the Constitution, and it's becoming a pattern across the country.

Here's the thing – the brief points out something crucial. The American tradition doesn't broadly restrict arms use by the public. There are supposed to be exceptional circumstances, not a blanket ban on riding the bus or visiting a park. These bans are built on shaky legal ground, and SAF is making that crystal clear to the Court.

This case could have massive implications for gun owners everywhere. If the Supreme Court takes it up and rules the right way, it could invalidate these ridiculous "sensitive places" schemes across the country. That's why groups like Maryland Shall Issue, Firearms Policy Coalition, and Maryland State Rifle and Pistol Association are all backing this fight.

As SAF founder Alan Gottlieb put it, some folks treat the Second Amendment like a second-class right. That's not how our Constitution works, and we're going to keep fighting until the right to keep and bear arms is fully restored.

I'll be watching this case closely. You should too.
