USPS Finally Opens the Door on Mailing Handguns — But We're Not Done Yet

May 25, 2026

Well, it's about time.

The Firearms Policy Coalition just filed comments pushing the USPS to finally allow handgun shipments under the same rules as long guns. For years, gun owners have been stuck with this ridiculous double standard — you could mail a rifle no problem, but a handgun? Forget about it. That restriction was always unconstitutional, and it looks like the government is finally catching up.

The proposed rule would treat handguns like rifles and shotguns when it comes to mailing. Sounds good, right? It is — but it's only half the battle. According to FPC President Brandon Combs, while this stops the outright discrimination against handguns, the proposal still piles on extra fees and red tape that treat law-abiding gun owners like criminals.

The USPS move comes after a January DOJ Office of Legal Counsel opinion that the handgun mailing ban violates the Second Amendment. That's a big deal — the government's own lawyers admitted they were wrong.

At my shop, customers ask about shipping options all the time. This change would make life easier for folks buying guns online or sending them to gunsmiths across state lines. But let's be clear: we're not settling for half-measures. The FPC is pushing USPS to finish the job and eliminate all the unnecessary hoops gun owners currently have to jump through.

The fight for our rights continues, but this is a victory worth noting.
