This is exactly the kind of government overreach that makes gun owners uneasy about doing business in today's climate.
Gun Owners of America is calling for a formal investigation after the DOJ and ATF reportedly posted a gun owner's protected tax returns and private firearm collection details on a public court docket. That's right — during ongoing litigation in *Silencer Shop Found. v. BATFE*, government attorneys allegedly filed the sensitive information of a GOA member where anyone could see it.
We're talking about ATF "Forms 1" — which are legally protected tax returns under federal law (26 U.S.C. § 6103) — plus the gun owner's name, city, state, and exactly what NFA items they own. All because the government couldn't be bothered to redact basic information.
But it gets worse. After being alerted to the breach, the DOJ allegedly publicized the same sensitive information a *second time*. That's not a mistake — that's negligence or worse.
"The government has no right to dox gun owners or broadcast their private tax returns to the world," GOA's Erich Pratt stated. Exactly right. This is exactly why many gun owners hesitate to engage with the NFA process or even buy certain firearms — they fear their information could end up public through government incompetence or worse.
GOA is demanding answers: Who made the decision to refile protected records? What safeguards failed? And most importantly — what procedures will be implemented to prevent the government from "doxing" gun owners in the future?
This is a serious privacy concern for every gun owner, and it directly involves the ATF's reckless handling of sensitive information. We'll be watching this investigation closely.
