Finally: Senate Confirms a Pro-2A ATF Director Who Actually Respects the Law

May 7, 2026

Well, it's about time.

The U.S. Senate just confirmed Robert Cekada as the permanent director of the ATF — and this one actually matters to anyone who sells guns for a living. Cekada was confirmed in a bipartisan vote of 59-39, making him the first ATF director ever confirmed after being nominated by a Republican president. Let that sink in for a minute. For decades, the ATF has been run by acting directors or ones rubber-stamped by anti-gun administrations. This is different.

The NSSF, our industry's trade group, has voiced strong support for Cekada, pointing to his 30+ years in law enforcement — including over 20 years with the ATF — as exactly the kind of experience we need running this agency. Their statement put it plainly: law-abiding gun owners and the firearm industry deserve an ATF leader who will focus on enforcing laws actually passed by Congress, holding criminals accountable, and respecting the Constitutional rights of Americans.

That's a refreshing change from the old pattern of ATF directors who seemed more interested in creating regulations out of thin air through guidance letters and rule-by-enforcement rather than following proper legislative processes. As a shop owner, the ATF director's attitude matters more than most people realize — it affects how Form 1 and Form 4 transfers are handled, how inspections are conducted, and whether the agency operates as an partner with legitimate dealers or an adversary.

Cekada's confirmation hearing back in February apparently went well enough that even some Democrat senators crossed the aisle to vote for him. That's rare these days. Whether he lives up to the hype remains to be seen, but for now, the industry — and gun owners in general — have reason to be cautiously optimistic.

One down. Now let's see if he actually follows through.
